As someone who has travelled to Indonesia several times, I've never encountered pollution as bad as I've experienced in Jakarta (I'm sure other 3rd world cities are as bad or worse). The air outside smells like the air you smell in a garage when you first start your gas car. At night, you could barely see the Moon because the smog was so bad and the Moon looked brown. It's really horrible.
Even more telling was during the Pandemic, skies turned blue for the first time in decades because no cars were on the streets, and the children were in amazement. It's sad that it takes a huge catastrophe for an entire generation to see blue skies.

Jakarta recently passed a threshold to become the largest city in the world. It might be an extreme case, though I can't speak for all cities.
